Project Description:
Royal Oak Burial Park retained LEES + Associates to prepare a development plan for a 13 acre expansion of their interment area, focussing on a sloped area north of an existing mausoleum building. The resulting design proposed a Mediterranean-inspired reflecting pool and patio at the high point of the project area, stepping down over four terraces, with a central rill flowing down a series of water steps and terminating at an elegant fountain and gathering area.
Completed in the fall of 2007, the area now provides over 700 new in-ground casket lots. Clipped boxwood hedges frame the terrace walls, columnar trees line the pedestrian pathways and perennial beds enclose the grass burial areas. Ultimately, each terrace will also include a cremation garden with columbaria, cremation lots and family urns arranged in garden-like settings to accommodate cemetery visitors year-round.
