Ottawa Police Services Memorial Cemetery at Beechwood Cemetery
Client: Ottawa Police Services
Location: Ottawa, Ontario
Date: 2011
Project Description:
The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) represents almost 2,000 enlisted and civilian members, plus approximately 600 members now retired. In 2011, the OPS commissioned LEES+Associates to develop a plan and illustrative rendering for its proposed new burial area to be located adjacent to the RCMP’s National cemetery, at Ottawa’s historic Beechwood Cemetery. The plan for the new OPS Cemetery includes in-ground and cremation interment options that will be available to eligible members. The design features an arrival court that integrates etched granite interpretive signage telling the story of the OPS, a raised planter and seat wall, and a central walkway leading to a formal ceremonial area.
The design seeks to express the organization’s common principles of Pride, Professionalism and Respect. This was achieved through the appropriate arrangement of ceremonial and interment spaces, along with careful design development and the detailing of key features. The illustrative graphic and 3D models developed by LEES+Associates will be used to help raise the estimated $35,000 required to construct the site. The new cemetery is to be built in four phases, commencing in 2012.
