Client: Village of Cache Creek
Location: Cache Creek, BC
Date: 2009
Project Description:
The Village of Cache Creek, located in B.C.’s scenic Fraser Canyon, approached LEES+Associates in 2009 to develop a plan to manage their small but neglected pioneer cemetery. A key issue was the preservation of the few graves scattered throughout the site. There was also a concern that other unmarked graves may be present in the immediate area.
LEES+Associates worked closely with the Village to update their bylaws and to develop a strategy to restore the cemetery to a place of significance in the community. The result is an attractive, park-like space for visitors to enjoy the site’s panoramic views. The design includes a custom designed entry gate and arbour, new pathways and native, low-water plantings. The cultural and heritage qualities of the site are respected through the use of simple structures and materials, reflecting a traditional, western aesthetic, rather than imposing an unauthentic, “historic” style.
Construction was completed in the fall of 2009. The cemetery now includes the first of several proposed columbaria walls, as well as benches and flower beds planted with informal, ornamental grasses and perennials. LEES+Associates determined that there is also capacity for over 100 new graves, should the Village decide to reopen the site to in-ground burials.
