Project Name: Mountain View Cemetery - Masonic Area Redevelopment, Vancouver, BC
(with Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg Landscape Architects & Birmingham and Wood Architects)
Client: City of Vancouver
Project Description:
The Masonic Area Redevelopment has revived and transformed Mountain View Cemetery, returning it to the fold of Vancouver’s public space. The redevelopment of the historic Masonic Area at Vancouver’s Mountain View Cemetery was based on respecting its original spatial relationships while investing it with a bold and contemporary aesthetic.Natural materials and simple forms provide new spaces for over 2,507 interments, as well as a meaningful context for community celebrations. The landscape architect’s thoughtful combinations of materials and finishes link the new interventions with the existing, creating a dynamic civic space for the public to honour both the dead and the living.
In 2009, LEES+Associates (with Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg) garnered a Regional Award of Merit from the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) for their work on the Masonic Area Redevelopment.
