Doukhobor Commemorative Site

Client: Government of BC

Location: New Denver, BC

Date: 2002-2005

Project Description:

In the 1950's, a sect of the Doukhobor community was engaged in protests in the West Kootenay region of BC. During this time, some of the children of the “Sons of Freedom” sect were taken to New Denver – a small lakeside community on the Slocan Lake. From 1953 till 1959 an educational residential institution was home to these children.

In 2005, the Government of BC undertook a reconciliation process that included an apology and the creation of a commemorative site in New Denver. The finishing details, including interpretive panels, witness stones and sculpture were not installed on the site, however, a family table, broken in two and a seating circle around a large Larch tree – the central components of the design – were installed.

LEES+Associates led the design and construction of the project and were actively involved in the consultation processes.
